Hockey and Swim Groups Score Provincial Funding

SIDNEY – Two sports organizations in Saanich and on Pender Island will share $115,000 in the latest round of gaming grants released by the provincial government. They are:

  • British Columbia Amateur Hockey Association - $110,000
  • Pender Island Otters Summer Swim Club - $5,000

Why this matters:

  • Across British Columbia, 109 recipients will share $2,064,830 in this latest round of grants from provincial gaming revenue.
  • The grants are the latest from provincial gaming revenue announced for the new fiscal year, which began on April 1, 2011.
  • This round of grants benefits organizations in the sports for youth and disabled persons sector.

Quote:

“These groups both play an important role because they encourage our young people to get fit and stay active. That’s a benefit today that will pay dividends in this community’s future.”
- Saanich North and the Islands MLA Murray Coell

Quick facts:

  • In 2010/11, government distributed a total of $135 million in gaming grants for eligible community programs and services.  The original budget called for $120 million, but in March Premier Christy Clark added an extra $15 million.
